Kasabian – Stevie Lyrics 25 days ago
Stevie, which was previously known by the titles Kid and Live To Fight/Live To Fight Another Day, was inspired by artist Carrie Reichardt, particularly her Mad in England mosaics. "The first verse is elders pinning you down," Serge explained in an NME interview, "the second verse is the comeback."[1] The song is about "standing up for what you believe in. [...] We all have our own, personal battles."[2] The name Stevie was chosen for its gender ambiguity.

The Wombats – MOVING TO NEW YORK Lyrics 1 month ago
The story behind the song was about a Norwegian girl that Murph had been on a few dates with. One night he asked her if she was going out for a few drinks, she said ‘no’ and that she was just going to stay at home. Later that night Murph walked into a bar in Liverpool called Hannah’s bar (incidentally where we played our first ever show in 2003!) and saw the Norwegian girl kissing another girl!

Florence + the Machine – Spectrum Lyrics 8 months ago
“Spectrum” is all about true joy, light, and positivity, as opposed to the usual irony, coldness, and skepticism found in a lot of contemporary popular music. The song highlights the result of a relationship reaching its full spectrum, thus producing an illuminating love that will shine forever. When asked about the song in an interview with BBC’s Newsbeat, Florence Welch said that the song “has a lot to do with rainbows and prisms.”

Dave LaChappelle, the director of the song’s video, spoke about it in a behind-the-scenes clip, saying:” This song is one of the brightest, and obviously one with a positive message on the record…It’s big and it’s colorful and I started thinking about color and all the different color images in my head…This rainbow idea came up, and it’s just something about your work, and so that was kind of in my dream scenario.”

Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics 1 year ago
In a 2007 interview with XFM, frontman Dave Grohl stopped short of explaining the meaning behind "The Pretender", but alluded its roots go to political unrest of the time it was written. Grohl noted: "That's the thing with lyrics, you never want to give away specifics, because it's nice for people to have their own idea or interpretation of the song. But, you know, everyone's been fucked over before and I think a lot of people feel fucked over right now and they're not getting what they were promised, and so something to do with that."

Grohl also told XFM "The Pretender" was not initially planned for the album and happened really quickly:

That song didn't happen until later on in the session. We didn't go into making the record with that song and it happened after we recorded a lot of stuff. Up until that point, I didn't know if we had a good opening song or not. So after we recorded it, I thought, "oh this is perfect, we have the song to open the record," and it just became everybody's favourite song. ... It's the type of song that I look forward to opening shows with and it came together really easily... We put that song together in, I don't know, a day, whereas a lot of the other songs we worked on for weeks.

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know Lyrics 1 year ago
Singer/guitarist Alex Trimble explained the song's meaning to Spinner: "The song was written about touring... the lifestyle that we lead and the people that we left behind, through the fragility of our business that we're in. It's so fickle and you don't know where you're going to be in a few years time, but yet you're giving up so much to be in this position."

Spacehog – In The Meantime Lyrics 1 year ago
Spacehog's lead singer Royston Langdon explained that "In The Meantime" was "some kind of metaphor of a worldly or inner-worldly search for the end of isolation, and the acceptance of one's self is in there." Additionally, Langdon stated that "at the end of the day it's saying whatever you gotta do, it's OK, it's alright. And I think that's also me talking to myself, getting through my wan anxieties and fear of death." It features lyrics describing "the end" and also consistently repeats "we love the all for you," serving as a prophecy for always being able to escape darkness by finding one's own self-acceptance.

Jacob Banks – Unknown (To You) Lyrics 2 years ago
Jacob Banks’ “Unknown (To You) is a breakup song based on a relationship in which the narrator, by all indications has behaved immaturely. This can be ascertained not from allegations being made against him but rather what he insinuates about himself. And in that regard, it can be concluded that he treated the addressee of this track (his soon-to-be estranged partner) with cruelty, disrespect and indifference.\n\nNow he is faced with a situation in which he knows that they are about to part ways, this time for good. And considering the tone of the song, this is something he is very hurt about despite understanding that he deserves it.\n\nThe titular phrase “unknown to you” is derived from the chorus in which Banks recognizes that not only is the bond coming to an end, but also the relationship is headed down a path when ultimately the addressee will no longer even acknowledge his existence. \n\nAnd that brings us to the true sentiment behind this track. And what’s this sentiment? It’s a sentiment in which the singer is imploring the addressee to be painfully honest with him. He wants them to be honest with him, regardless of knowing that the words which are set to come out of their mouth are not going to please him. In other words, he is actually anticipating they tell him that they have no intention of dealing with him in the future.

London Grammar – Lose Your Head Lyrics 2 years ago
This song is seemingly centered on a narrative based on an individual being unable to get over an ex. At some points (i.e. the first verse) the singer comes off as if she is suffering from such an affliction. But for the most part it would appear that she is addressing someone who rather has her on his mind. And basically, what she is expressing is a sentiment akin to telling his individual that he is playing himself by now realizing that he misses her. In other words the phrase “lose your head” alludes to the notion of being caught up with someone whom you let go of in the past. That is to say that those who are plagued with such thoughts are resultantly suffering from a lack of inner peace.

Arctic Monkeys – Fluorescent Adolescent Lyrics 2 years ago
“Fluorescent Adolescent” is arguably indie rock band Arctic Monkeys’ most famous and well-known song. Released in 2007, from their “Favourite Worst Nightmare Album” the track’s upbeat guitar and drum have stood the test of time in the past eleven years, with it still being a firm favourite in the hearts of not only Arctic Monkeys fans, but those who love indie rock.\n\nThe track tells the story of aging and how life seems to not be as fun the older you get. The Arctic Monkeys tell this story through describing the changes in a particular woman’s sex life. “You used to get it in your fishnets/now you only get it in your night dress”, describing how the woman’s sexual endeavours are probably less spontaneous than they used to be, as she only seems to have sex when she’s in her night dress. Also referring to the lack of Tabasco in the famous cocktail “Bloody Mary”, could be a metaphor for saying that her sex life is now lacking in spice or excitement. The chorus emphasizes that her memories aren’t stupid even though they may appear to be stupid to her now, so she should look back fondly on them. The rest of the song continues to make more sexual references about men and continues to reminisce on the older woman’s past sexual encounters.\n\nThe lyrics of the song were actually written not only by frontman of the Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner, but one of his ex-girlfriends, Johanna Bennett. Turner tell The Times magazine in an interview in July 2007 that they were on holiday in the Mediterranean, and they were reminiscing about people they knew at school. He claims it “started as a joke” and says that “some of the lines were hers, I couldn’t have not credited her”.\n\nThe music video doesn’t follow the storyline or narrative of the song and is quite random. It shows a group of men, one dressed as a sad clown fighting a group of men in suits, using cars to run them over as well as calling for back up. It shows that the main protagonists has history with his enemy, taking the audience back to when the clown and the enemy were young – one dressed in clown attire and one dressed in a suit sitting on playground swings. The video has been watched almost 100 million times since its release.

The Wombats – MOVING TO NEW YORK Lyrics 2 years ago
Dan Haggis of The Wombats recently explained the meaning behind the song to an online music magazine:

"Moving to New York was one of the first songs we recorded that started to define our sound for the first album. I remember first hearing Murph playing around with it on a piano, slowly, like a ballad, in a practice room in our music college, LIPA, in 2004/5. I thought it sounded cool and we decided to try it with the band. We had a band practice in LIPA and it suddenly became this fast, upbeat and dancy song that felt like something new and exciting. The story behind the song was about a Norwegian girl that Murph had been on a few dates with. One night he asked her if she was going out for a few drinks, she said ‘no’ and that she was just going to stay at home. Later that night Murph walked into a bar in Liverpool called Hannah’s bar (incidentally where we played our first ever show in 2003!) and saw the Norwegian girl kissing another girl!"

Years & Years – Real Lyrics 3 years ago
Olly Alexander told NME how the song was inspired by a "really bad relationship" with a former boyfriend. "When I met him, I was really wasted and I fell off a bin and had to go A&E because I sprained my wrist, so I put in the line, 'Broke my phones playing games with you,'" he said. "And then I got this rash, but it wasn't like a sexual rash - honestly! - I had really bad eczema. That's where the line, 'I Itch all night, I Itch for you' comes from."

Years & Years – Real Lyrics 3 years ago
This was an important song for Years & Years in developing their sound. Olly Alexander told The Sun: "That was a real turning point for this band. I wrote that when I had been dumped by this guy. He was with someone else and then I wrote this song really quickly on the piano."

"Emre (Turkmen, synths) had the beat that he had made on his laptop and we put the two things together and we were just so excited. We loved the harmony we'd found and it made as to rethink. It was what we needed the rest of the album to sound like. It felt like a real light bulb moment."

Noel Gallagher – AKA...What A Life Lyrics 3 years ago
Regarding SMUSER17649086's comments - I don't think that songs have to be intelligent sometimes if it's just a good tune then that just works.

I mean look at most of Oasis's back catalogue - I'd say that at least 75% of their lyrics to their songs won't have deep or intelligent meaning although it might to the band however look at what an absolute massive success they became - one of the highest regarded rock bands in the world for their time.

Years & Years – King Lyrics 4 years ago
Vocalist Olly Alexander wrote the song's lyric at two different stages in his life. He explained to Digital Spy: "It's about being in a relationship with someone and how that can feel really intoxicating, but that can be really addictive and you can feel like a king. You know it has to end and you feel it's going bad, but you don't feel strong enough to end it yourself. You want the other person to end it. That's what I felt like I was going through over the period of a year, and then towards the end, I wrote the song."

Empire of the Sun – High and Low Lyrics 4 years ago
Empire of the Sun's Nick Littlemore told KROQ's Kevin & Bean the story behind this slow-building euphoric song. "It was about this girl I knew when I was a kid called Alice D who was kind of a wild child. She did all kinds of crazy things," he explained. "There's an Australian film called The Year My Voice Broke, I don't know if you're familiar with it, but there's a girl in that that kind of lives a mysterious life. We wanted to write a song that captured the innocence and bravery of youth, and being a teenager, and having these kind of experiences where you throw caution to the wind and you try things for the first time."
