I'm at school like 600 miles away from my boyfriend and he's now in Australia for another 6 months, so this song speaks volumes to me! Before we were even together we used to sit up til 4 in the morning every night before i had to leave to come back to school and listen to this song. It's kinda become like "our" song, and when he left for Australia we played it and i just cried and cried and cried!
Thinking about meanings etc why does it even need to be about leaving though? I think the general message is treasure every moment with that someone special, the one person that you would move mountains for because one day they wont be there any more.
Incidentally it sounds pretty snazzy in 4 part harmony - my friends and i arranged it and we sound pretty damn hot! |

God ive just realised that this song reminds me of my best friend. He's dying and im the only person who properly knows. oooo btw i think its actually "amazes me, the will of instinct" not "amazes me with her instinct". If the line is as i say then it could almost refer to Kurt as much as the rapist himself. I think this song is so brilliant because Kurt has really managed to capture the viewpoint of the rapist. It's hard to get into the mindset of someone so sick that they could attack and rape someone but he's done it brilliantly. |

i heard in an article that was devoted to Kurt (it was about the time of 10 years since his death) and it said that Polly was written when Kurt heard about a girl being raped using a blow torch and ropes and stuff. And then this guy - Gerald Friend i think he was called - and another guy raped a girl whilst playing this song. The girl escaped and Friend was jailed etc. When Kurt found out about it he got really angry and in the Incesticide sleevenotes he calls them "a waste of sperm" i think. |

im not sure exactly and this is without thinking about it a great deal but i think its something to do with where people are in their lives. Like three young guys who used a fuck around with drugs and stuff and then they matured a little and now own houses and stuff but then thats just a part of the song. theres whole other sides to it and other levels that need to be explored but i dnt have the time. also sometimes i think its quite nice just to listen to a song that you dont completely understand on all levels, and that you havent ripped to pieces trying to understand. I think its supposed to be a confusing song and you should enjoy it that way because if you rip a song to pieces exploring its meanings then you will lose some of the magic - no matter what. |

yeah sure the song's a lil juvenile but is that such a bad thing? Maybe its about young love and fragility of it - one minute it's there and the next minute its gone.
also this song as other levels to it and if you are just listening to it sayings its poppy crap then maybe you're not wanting to understand the song itself. It's more focussed on the words rather than the music but just proves her music is more varied than just piano and voice (dont get me wrong they are amazing - wish i could play like that ) |

this song just makes me think of a situation i may or may not have been in. this guy who was head over heels for this girl - his best friend. he didnt realise how much her boyfriend was hurting her at the time and just kept going on about how much things sucked for him cos he wanted her but couldnt have her. So when the girl and her boyfriend broke up he was too busy thinking about that to notice that she was falling for him too and if he hadnt been so selfish he would have got her, probably. |

This might be completely off the mark but this song kinda speaks to me at the moment. there seems to be a relationship with an older guy going on and she just wants to please him. However sometimes it seems he is just having fun with her whilst discovering himself as a person, and discovering the things he needs from a girl ("this is nothing new, just another phase of finding what i really need...") Then I think at the end he realises that actually he does need her but its different because shes too young for him. |

This song was my favourite song about 8 years ago when i was about 8 - the age of the girl in the song, i imagined! It got through to me cos i had a close relationship with my babysitter i think. Anyway last year I wanted to hear the song again but i couldn't find it so my Mum bought me Dar's album and I've been hooked ever since, and this song is still one of my favourites. It wasn't until this time round that I heard it that I really understood the song though. I think its about irony: the little girl has this great relationship with the babysitter and perceives the babysitter to have a great relationship with her boyfriend. When the boyfriend makes the Babysitter choose between college and him, the Babysitter gets upset and tries to explain to the girl why. The irony comes where the child has said earlier that she wants a boyfriend just like "Tom", and that she thinks that the Babysitter is upset because she's leaving to go to college and she doesn't understand that the "perfect" boyfriend has made her babysitter choose between him and going to college. The innocence Dar creates in this song is really moving and it gets to me everytime. |
