Wow, so many comments. I've always loved this song, had it on a CD mix back in the day. It just came up on my Apple Music and was looking at the lyrics, and this particular part really hits home with me:

I went through a tough breakup (all breakups are tough for me) a couple of years ago, and these lyrics are a perfect fit for my feelings about it. To this day, I hate her and I will always feel that way. Mostly because of the "cold silence" from her. And that cold silence totally eroded any "sense of compassion" I felt for her for anything i might have done wrong. And with just the power of the song, and how good it is, I feel it even more. Love it. |

So I just saw a post on another song that this is a story album, about someone (Wendy, I guess) getting AIDS. I know the final song is about that, but never thought that the whole CD was a story on it. I'm surprised Johnette has not mentioned it, though, it that were the case. But thinking that way, I can actually see it as a storyline. So this song would be about her first contracting AIDS. She uses the novel as a way to tell it as like a metaphor. Very interesting, I'm going to listen to the entire album and see if it does strike me as that. |

I think it's about a relationship that's ending, and how you go from the up's and down's of it - how you go from "I'll make my own way.....you're a joke", to an hour later, you miss them like crazy "without you, i'm a mess without you".
I read those lyrics, and I have felt that way a few times after being dumped, especially. I'm like "F you, good riddance" to about crying and wanting things to be back how they were. |

I agree with it all, except the "Ho" part. I mean, I see it just as her talking to herself - like maybe I would, by saying "come on, dumb*ss, what are you waiting for". Not because society sees her as a Ho, it's just kind of a term not to be taken literally. |

I am sure it is about a former girlfriend/lover of his. Or, perhaps, it is not about an actual girl he knows but a typical scenario in Hollywood; someone who used to be a model or such ("smiling was your money-maker"), and has fallen so far she is now a prostitute ("the driftwood in your eyes said nothing short of love for pay"). |

This is how I see it, too. I think the part of her shaking and leaves her shuddering for days says it is more serious than just being afraid of admitting love. She is very sick, but he "is not worried" because he trying to convince himself that he is not totally in love with her, so it's okay. But his friend says "it's all or nothing", so he needs to be concerned (or drop it already). And then the times when Anna's "kindess falls like rain" he is overwhelmed with the feeling of love and "it washes him away and begins to change his mind." And then when she sneezes, he is reminded of her condition and it has to be love because it tears himself up and he "is not ready for this sort of thing". |

The Pope picture was after this song was released. This is on her 2nd album, so this song would have been written in regards to things that happened after her first release "The Lion and the Cobra". Her SNL appearance was after this album was out and her huge hit, "Nothing Compares 2 U". |

I think it is pretty self-explanatory after reading exactly what Hans Christian Andersen's short story, "Emperor's New Clothes" was about, and then re-reading the lyrics. The story is about 2 weavers that make the King a new outfit that is invisible only to people that are stupid or unworthy of their position, or so they say. The King cannot see the material but acts like he does so that they don't think he is unworthy of being King. He parades around with nothing on, thinking everyone can see his clothes.
And then comparing that to the song's meaning - things are probably rocky in her relationship with a lot going on: her pregnancy, she's young and her sudden fame. People are talking about her, criticizing her, and saying things, maybe calling her things - people that don't really know her. All of these people that are talking about her "have a severe case of the Emperor's New Clothes", which is to say they are not worthy of saying anything to her and she is comfortable with herself and her actions and will "sleep with a clear conscious" and "sleep in peace", as well she should. |

I love the version of this, along with "If I Could" and "My Heart...So Blue", with Andrew Poppy's orchestral arrangement. Those 3 songs on the "Two-Ring CIrcus" are just incredible. It was really the first I started getting into alternative music in the late 80's. I remember first hearing in college where a friend of mine was playing music while shooting baskets. Anyway, not that anyone really cares about that. Very powerful and emotional song. |

This is one of my favorite RHCP songs of all time. It is SO spiritual; Anthony's lyrics are absolutely the best in this. Listening to this song, I think there are lot of ways you can explain it, and only AK knows the true meaning behind it. But listening and reading it, I have a different perspective. I think he is singing it from the point of view of someone that has died, and is like a spirit around his love. "Miles and miles of netherworlds I roam"......"I've been around, but not around enough"......he has been around spiritually, sleeping in her bed and being in her dreams, but not around enough because he is not there in the flesh. I have gone through this verse by verse, and I can really see it. And then you think of it as a precursor to the next song, "Venice Queen" and that seals the deal for it. Really, go through the lyrics with that frame of mind and see what you think. These 2 songs (this and Venice Queen) back-to-back or something else. A true work of art; genius, really |

My personal opinion is that this girl lost her son, and she carries his hair around in his pocket to hold onto him and "she talks to angels" because her son is an angel now and that is her whole world. She is an addict, too, because she uses to deal with the pain of losing her son. The cross, of course, represents Jesus who she has not met - not yet - but will when she joins the her son and the other angels she "talks to". She knows no lovers because her life is filled with thoughts of her son and the love for the him and the angels he is with, and for Jesus whom she hopes to meet soon. And of course the drugs, to help her relieve herself of the pain and to perhaps hasten seeing all of them. |
